The Nightstalker use the void to hunt and eliminate their quarry with single well placed shots. They strike fear into those who witness it and tear the souls of those who have the misfortune to be impacted by the arrow. The Nightstalker is for the Guardian who wants to harass, harangue, and drive into an inevitable end with the power of the void.
The first thing to consider is your grenade of which there are three types;
A grenade that attaches to any surface and emits a torrent of damaging void light. This grenade with the right placement can be quite the powerhouse. It emits your void light in a slight cone and can cover most doorways and entryways and as such can shut down areas quite easily. The damage sends out the void light opposite to the end that is attached to a particular surface, so if it is attached to the ground it will emit the damaging portion of the grenade towards the heavens. In a PVE aspect this grenade is quite useful as it can eliminate large groups of enemies all at once and if you are being pursued by particularly relentless adds you can place it behind you. With respect to PVP, this grenade is quite easy to avoid and not incredibly decisive with most firefights but in relation to controlling zones and certain areas it is an ideal choice.
A grenade that creates a horizontal wall of burning void light. First things first, with this grenade, the direction of the grenade wall is for the most part up to RNG but it seems like if it is thrown and does not collide with any obstructions it will unfold in a horizontal manner from your position. If it does impact with something in the environment it will unfold in a random manner, This grenade can be used in both PVP and PVE with success in both arenas. The larger length of the Voidwall means you can damage or even kill enemies in a rapid fashion. On top of this, the void light has a swift time to kill and so opposing Guardians in the Crucible who are weaker or not paying close attention as well as minions of the Darkness who just aren’t quick enough will fall to your power.
The Vortex Grenade creates a vortex that damages enemies that are within its sphere. It has a definite PVE feel as its ability to damage and kill multiple enemies at once can be a great asset as it allows every grenade that is thrown, to be used effectively. In PVP it can be used with great success because of its ability to rapidly bring down enemy Guardians or reduce their health to the point where you can quite easily finish them off. It also has a distracting factor if it lands near or on top of an enemy due to the bright purple light, causing opposing Guardians to lose their bearings and become an easier target. This grenade is quite a popular choice when coupled with the melee ability of the Nightstalker, which is Smoke. This can be set to envenom any enemy who enters its midst and so throwing the Vortex grenade with the smoke rapidly after, can halve the time to kill.
The melee ability of the Nightstalker completely fits with the Hunter and Hunting images that encapsulate this subclass. The Nightstalker uses a throwable Smoke that can damage and disorient your enemies. The smoke can be both beneficial to you and your team as well as being damaging to your opponents. Nightstalkers use Smoke to complete their hunt of their opponent and if used effectively will result in your enemy falling and your Guardian standing triumphant. This Hunter of the void can be improved by three main perks;
Envenomed : Adds a toxin that damages enemies captured within the Smoke
Vanish in Smoke : You and allies near Smoke explosions vanish from sight
Snare : Allows Smoke to stick to surfaces, detonating when enemies are near
The Hunter moves throughout the world with a pinpoint precision by bending they very realities under their feet and making them submit. A Hunter uses a double or even triple jump, of which they use their command over the Light to even make the atoms and particles within the air yield to their control. This double jump allows for absolute precision to get to exactly where you require yourself to be. On top of this having an additional jump, allows for rapid corrections in direction to avoid hazards or an untimely end. On top of this the Nightstalker has three main modifiers that affect their jumping ability which are;
-Increased Control : Upgrades Double Jump for better directional control while in the air
-Triple Jump : Upgrades Double Jump with a third jump
Increased Jump : Upgrades Double Jump for even greater height
The Super ability for the hunter of the void, the Nightstalker, is known as Shadowshot, which tethers a large group of foes to a void anchor that slows and silences them for you and your fireteam. The Shadowshot is the quintessential manifestation of the stalker, that final well placed shot that spells disaster for your enemies. This Super is quite a neutral one and works wonders in both PVE and PVP. The initial arrow shot can kill an enemy outright if a direct hit is achieved and even if you don’t use the Shadowshot like a conventional bow, those caught in the tethering effect will be at your mercy for a short time. For those that are close to the void anchor, the tether branches out and increases the damage reception for your opponents as well as slows down their movements, allowing you to close in and deliver the killing blow. The Nightstalker can be changed in three main ways;
Blood Bound : Tethered enemies explode when killed. Damage to tethered targets is shared to all. This perk has a greater usefulness in PVE and is the perfect way to use your Super and get the maximum amount of damage in the quickest period of time. It is more useful in a PVE capacity due to the higher probability of larger amounts of adds being in the same immediate area at the same time. Whereas in PVP there may be a couple Guardians in the same location but with the alternate perks available, it may be better to leave this one out while battling for supremacy in the Crucible.
Black Hole : The Void Anchor has increased range, lasts significantly longer and can tether more targets. This addition to your Shadowshot is a viable choice for both PVP and PVE as it can hold adversaries within its void embrace for a longer period allowing you to get the most out of your Super. It has a fabulous application in PVE as the extended tether can be useful when battling against larger bosses such as in the raid when going up against the Warpriest or Golgoroth. It allows you to get the most out of the additional damage bonus.
Quiver : Fire Shadowshot up to three times. Void Anchors have reduced range. This perk is perfect for the Crucible and for the Nightstalker who uses their Shadowshot to send dark arrows within the hearts of their enemies. Due to the reduced range of the anchor, it is not incredibly viable for locking the opposition down and taking them out at your leisure. However the three void arrows allows your Nightstalker to charge into the heart of battle and swiftly terminate your adversaries and even with the reduced range, the void anchor can still work out in a positive manner.
