“They told me it would eat my thoughts and leave me full of Light.”
The Achlyophage Symbiote, which I will just call the Symbiote from here on in, because it will save time, is a PVE helmet for the Golden Gunner of a Hunter. It is a PVE helmet due to its exotic perk, Last Man Standing, becoming quite lacklustre in the Crucible. Last Man Standing provides your Gunslinger with one extra Golden Gun shot per use. This can be extremely beneficial in a PVE arena where you get one more bullet to burn your enemies into ash that is blown away on a gentle battlefield breeze. Anyone with common sense can tell you that the more damage you put out to your enemies and the more kills you score with your Super, the better it is going to be. But you may be wondering, if I get one more shot with my Golden Gun, why isn’t it a perfect item for Crucible? Well, it is true that you gain another shot with your Super but it also decreases the time you have to use it. As opposed to having 3 shots over a total of 12 seconds, you instead have 4 shots over 9 seconds. It does not seem like a lot but it definitely makes a difference. This is not saying that it is a worthless Crucible exotic. Far from it. As there are many occasions when multiple Guardians are close together, not to mention Golden Gun’s ability to score cross map kills will definitely help this along.
The Symbiote is mainly characterised by the presence of a lava-like fungus covering the sides and parts of the front of the helmet. It is clear that the fungus-stuff is acting upon the Guardian in some way, much like Ahamkara bones do to Hunters and Warlocks alike. The reason I believe it may be a Fungus or virus entity is partly because of the flavour text, as some Bacteria as well as Fungi tend to devour other particles and bacterial forms. On top of this the exotic perk provides you with an additional Golden Gun shot and as anyone with a basic knowledge of Biology understands, Bacteria are constantly replicating, hence gaining another Solar infused bullet. But of course this is just little speculation on the subject.
How to Acquire it?
The Achylophage Symbiote can be gained from an exotic helmet engram or purchasing it from Xur if you are lucky enough for him to have it in his inventory.
