Verod Rath was an elite member of the Jennerit society, and bodyguard to the Empress Lenore as a Keeper of the Blade which safeguarded the members of Jennerit high society. But is he as much of a threat as his legend tells us? A report by the Red Observer on 19207 sent to the Elder Mossire proves that Rath is as powerful as all tales. Being a Sustained Jennerit, Rath is well over 1400 years of age, having spent 1400 years as bodyguard to the Empress Lenore. The Red Observer had discovered with some shock that Rath is still quite young as many Keepers in the service of the Jennerit Empire are well over 18000 and still have not aged a day. Rath and the other Sustained as a result of that particular ritual are able to draw health from other biological beings, which Rath utilises consistently while in combat with biological opponents. On top of this, it was discovered, through means not disclosed (although many people would have died for this information), that Rath is quite difficult and almost impossible to kill. He is impervious to most small arms fire, resistant to many poisons and toxins, is incombustible and apparently immune to asphyxiation. The Red Observer stated that if the Jennerit Empire, led by Warmaster Rendain were to utilise Sustained troops, the opposing force may be at a disadvantage and quite hard pressed.
All was not good in Rath’s world however. The betrayal of Rendain changed him. Filled him with a singular hunger and desire for pain and vengeance. Rendain’s death was his goal . Rendain twisted, with his silver gilded words, the Keepers of the Blade, including Rath, into his service and turned them against their former mistress. Through this, Rendain was able to maintain contact with his loyal followers to garner enormous support for his coup. After three agonising years of Rath being blinded by Rendain’s deception, it was broken by Deande who confronted him with undeniable truth of the duplicity of the Warmaster. Rath was affected deeply by this, and stormed off to confront the Lord Commander so to demand answers about the real truth. Rendain brushed off the questions and filled with rage and betrayal, Rath drew Rendain’s own dagger and plunged it deep into his abdomen. However the story does not have a quick and happy ending, due to Rendain’s own Sustainment he did not die and realising that the Warmaster’s wound was not mortal, Rath fled. As the months progressed and the bitter civil war between Rendain’s Imperium and the loyalists of the Jennerit Empire under Lenore grew, Rath occupied his time hunting down and killing the other twenty Keepers that still remained in Rendain’s service. He did this without assistance showcasing what a force he is. From their collected phasic weapons and the dagger of Rendain, he forged a new style of sword, which he named, ‘Precept’. This word means a warrant utilised to regulate behaviour. This weapon became a symbol for Rath’s quest for vengeance.
After the final battle for Solus where Rendain was defeated, Rath was lost. The quest for vengeance had so consumed his life and his thoughts that it was hard to let go. Even after the Warmaster’s death, images and thoughts of him swirled through his mind. Rath was broken. The man who had dedicated 1400 years of loyal service to an Empire that ultimately betrayed him, left him hopeless and without a future. After a talk with Deande. who pushed him to discover a hobby related to swords and fighting, Rath realised that his future belonged with his new family. The Battleborn.
Weapon of Choice
Rath was the solely responsible Keeper who forged the phasic blades that became one of the symbols of the Keepers. As for Rath, he utilised three separate blades, Axiom, Praxis and Precept. Axiom and Praxis are thinner blades utilised for the more common fighting undertaken by Rath. These blades have variable edge breath and are capable of slicing objects at the subatomic level. Yes they are that sharp. Praxis is blessed with a basic level of antigrav functionality allowing it to be thrown and recalled to the waiting hand of Rath. These blades are used in a series of rapid combo slashes and spins in order to decimate your enemies at close range. This is combined with Precept, which was forged from the Warmaster’s dagger and blended in with captured phasic blades from traitorous Keepers. This particular blade being thicker and larger than Axiom and Praxis, is tuned in to the same frequency as the former swords. As such, it draws in and contains energy from Axiom and Praxis’ strikes which can be unleashed in a powerful strike that renders enemies unable to counterattack.
Rath is a close range melee character with skills that can be utilised from the middling ranges. While he is better optimised at the closer ranges, he has an agility to him that allows him to almost hop and skip around the battlefield, delivering devastating strikes that can stop most foes in their tracks and allows both him and fellow Battleborn to move in for the kill. Rath does possess one semi-long range skill, which is known as Crossblade, which, utilising Axiom and Praxis, he sends out an ‘X’ shaped blast of energy that carves through opposing forces. If you are planning on undertaking Battleborn missions or competitive play with Rath, ensure that you get up close and personal due to the fact that at any ranges other than right on top of your target, you will be losing potential. However, that being said, while many melee attackers move slow and hit hard, one great asset of Rath is the sheer speed at which he moves. Do not stand still as you hack and slash, move around your enemies and make yourself harder to target as well as giving you room to finish them off with your blades or to utilise one of his varied skills.
Passive/Genetic Syphon : When Rath damages an enemies health, he steals health worth 8% of the damage from melee attacks and 10% of the damage from skills.
Weapon/Axiom and Praxis : Rath’s quick primary melee attack can be chained multiple times for a quick combo, while his secondary sword sweep deals area of effect damage.
Talent/Bladekeeper’s Vestment : Rath’s ceremonial Jennerit armour is sturdy enough to absorb plenty of damage, but light enough to preserve his speed and mobility.
Skill 1/Crossblade : Throws an energy blade forward a limited distance, dealing 200 damage.
Skill 2/Catalytic Smash : Unleashes a shock wave, extending directly ahead of Rath, Dealing 133 damage and knocking targets into the air.
Ultimate/Dreadwind : After a brief wind-up, initiates a whirlwind attack lasting 4 seconds, dealing 83 damage per hit to enemies in range.
*Slowing Strike : Crossblade slows enemies on impact. +3 seconds slow duration.
*(MUTATION)Concussive Smash : Catalytic Smash no longer produces a shockwave that knocks targets into the air, but stuns enemies on impact if they have recently been hit by a Crossblade.
*Waveform Smash : Catalytic Smash’s shockwave is shortened, but spreads out to the left and right.
*Shield Syphon : When Crossblade damages an enemies shield, Rath’s shield recharges by the amount of damage dealt. +100% shield restored on hit.
*(MUTATION)Eviscerating Blade : A portion of damage dealt by Crossblade bypasses enemy shields. +60% shield penetration.
*Angers Echo : When a Crossblade is destroyed, a new Crossblade will spawn, moving towards Rath and dealing half the damage to enemies.
*Terror from Above : Allows Rath to double jump.
*Spin to Win : Rath’s primary melee combo’s finishing spin fires twice at the end of the combo.
*Crimson Fastness : When Rath attacks with Catalytic Smash, he will leap forward before he smashes
*Catalytic Flash : Catalytic Smash silences enemies on impact. +3 seconds silence duration.
*Skillful Syphoning : Genetic Syphon steals additional health when a skill deals damage to an enemy. +20% life steal.
*(MUTATION)Swordsman’s Salve : Greatly increases Genetic Syphon life-stealing properties for Rath’s melee attacks, but removes the effect from his skills.
*Not a Vampire : Genetic Syphon steals additional health when attacking enemies with melee strikes. +11% life steal.
*Brutal Blade : Increases Crossblade’s base damage. +15% damage.
*Catastrophic Smash : Doubles the shock wave length of Catalytic Smash.
*Evasive Maneuvers : When Rath’s shield is broken, movement speed is increased for a short time. +30 movement speed for 6 seconds.
*(MUTATION)Spin to Slow : Rath’s primary melee combo finishing spin slows enemies. +1 second slow duration.
*To the Point : Increases base damage of all melee strikes. +18% damage.
*Energetic Projection : Doubles the effective range of Crossblade.
*Quick Cross : Reduces Crossblade’s cooldown. -20% cooldown.
*Softened Target : Enemies hit by Catalytic Smash will take more damage from Crossblade for a short time. +25% damage for 4 seconds.
*Zealous Smash : Killing an enemy with Catalytic Smash reduces Dreadwind’s cooldown. -3 seconds per kill.
*Dreadheart : Grants a movement speed boost to Rath while Dreadwind is active. +30% movement speed.
*(MUTATION)Unstoppable Assault : Dreadwind generates an overshield upon activayion. +225 overshield for 4 seconds.
*Desperate Assault : Damage dealt by Dreadwind is increased while Rath’s shield is broken. +45% damage.
