Taking A Small Far Reach Into ‘Dishonored 2’

I was able to pick up my edition of Dishonored 2 today in its shiny new steelbook. So I sat down with my life sized Corvo mask and opened Netflix (those download times are killer). Once it was finally ready to go I launched right in.

One of the first things you notice once entering the new world of the next instalment in this series is that it is so much brighter and more detailed, but still captures the danger and mystery of the first Dishonored. There are still hidden occult places to find, a new plague (stay away from the buzzing) and dangers to traverse.

Choose Your Player (As Long As I Am Player One!)

One of the most important things about Dishonored 2 is the fact that you are able to play as either Emily or Corvo. As either daughter or father. The choice is entirely yours, the only difference being in their powers and the dialogue that will change throughout the storyline. However you will not get to choose a new character for alternating missions, whoever you choose at the beginning is who you will be required to complete that particular story with, the other becoming indisposed during your foray.

The Outsider

Of course he had to make an appearance, but he is slightly different to how he was in the first game. For one his voice has changed, not having the apathetic, dulcet tones of Corvo’s guide anymore. The New Outsider does not have a bad voice but it will take some time to get used to (definitely prefer the old one). However his personality is still the same, with his vague mumbo jumbo that references your choices and how interesting they are and his monotoned expression.

One thing is different though, besides the scenery of the Void, and that is the fact he offers you a choice. I was playing through as Emily so far, so I am not sure if it changes although I assume it wouldn’t, but the Outsider offers a choice of whether to utilise powers or to not. The choice is entirely yours, but you will have to live with it throughout the entirety of the game, or one of the three save files you can now have.

The Boat Is Still There

Your mode of transport into the depths of the missions and the secret places of Dunwall and Karnaca, is still a boat. A cool looking boat but a boat nonetheless. However this time it is not piloted by Samuel the boatman, a beloved figure in the initial game, but is instead controlled by a NPC known as Meagan Foster, a one-eyed, one-armed boat captain who is quite important to Emily and Corvo throughout the game. Not to spoil it but she is secretly an agent of the Outsider…probably…I mean probably not, one-arm is interesting and all but still probably boring to him.

Cutscenes And Mission Briefs

One thing I was insanely happy about was the appearance of cutscenes, little noir movies that almost looked as if they were drawn and thrown together like a flipbook. I like it. With the voiceover of either Emily, Corvo or whoever is providing mission information at the time, you can learn a fair bit of pre-emptive info on your target and the assignment at hand.

On top of this, certain missions provide you with something akin to a mission brief, where a NPC gives you all the details you will need. This serves to break up the game and introduce a fair bit of depth throughout the campaign, which, even though I have not played for too long, is quite refreshing.

They Can Talk!

Thats right folks, Emily and Corvo can now talk. They have voices, the Outsider has truly blessed them in Dishonored 2. While you play through the new game, you can interact with the civilians you discover and have conversations with them. On top of this, Emily/Corvo will talk to themselves when you take down/kill an enemy or even observing traps and the state of the city itself. It is really quite cool to hear their commentary on the messed up world they inhabit.
