Remember the time before games were undeniably complex. Before flashy explosions and almost too real graphics become the norm. Before the sea of FPS, RPG and MOBA games dominated the market. In that time the 3D platformer was king, where you hunted collectibles, fought bosses and looked damn good doing it.
Enter Yooka-Laylee, yet another rag-tag pair of heroes fighting to prevent unspeakable calamities from occurring. Created by newly formed gaming studio Playtonic Games, Yooka-Laylee captures the spirit of that simpler time, when characters such as Banjo and Kazooie, Ratchet and Clank and Spyro captured our hearts and minds.
The story goes that Yooka the male Chameleon and Laylee the wisecracking female bat are on a quest to stop the evil and quite possibly very real villain known as Capital B, that is attempting to convert all the worlds literature into pure profit. With five massive and colourful worlds to explore and conquer as well as an array of powerful and lets face it, over the top bosses, to defeat, Yooka and Laylee will restore the world to its rightful state.
Throughout their book-diving journey, Yooka and Laylee will use their vast array of tactical abilities such as tongue whipping, sonar blasting, sky soaring, fire breath and much more, to find and collect the mysterious and wondrous Pagies. These magical items can be used to unlock new worlds/books for the player to warp into, or to expand the already unlocked worlds.
While exploring the beautifully constructed worlds, listening to the sublime music, interrupted by truly cheesy humour, you will encounter wacky characters to chat to and assist, hostile enemies that will try and stop you and little mini-games to test out and master. All while trying to outsmart a corporate sociopath. This is a game that throws back to a genre that once surpassed all others and it is simply beautiful.
Yooka-Laylee comes out April 11th for Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC and Mac.
