Exotic Review: Doom Fang Pauldron

Nobody calls it that.

The Doom Fang Pauldron. This wacky and odd looking Titan Exotic bolsters all things Sentinel Shield and provides functionality in almost any situation that you decide to go Captain America on. Plus purple is definitely my colour.

Doom Fang Pauldron holds the intrinsic perk, Horns of Doom, an apt name if ever I read one. Horns of Doom recharges Shield Throw when you score melee kills with Shield Bash. Shield Throw can only be utilised when the Sentinel Shield Super is active but is an incredibly valuable asset when you consider the ranged capabilities combined with the close-quarters nature of the Super. If you utilise your Sentinel’s abilities efficiently, you can throw one or two shields, deal a lot of damage to squishies and then proceed to Shield Bash nearby foes to get your Shield Throw back. It is a synergistic union which can grant a lot of additional damage. However, Horns of Doom also recharges your Sentinel Shield Super when you score a melee ability kill, which is always a good thing. The fact is a Sentinel has the capability to eliminate numerous enemies with one melee ability strike which provides a significant bonus to getting your Sentinel Shield back, which in turn will activate the Horns of Doom initial perk. Fun right?

Performance

The Doom Fang Pauldron functions wherever there are faces to punch in and Supers to activate. Basically, wherever you will use your Sentinel Shield the Doom Fang Pauldron can optimise your killing capability. In Crucible scenarios, the Shield Throw can be invaluable in taking down retreating Guardians, especially when they can bounce off multiple targets. That being said, the only real situation I can see Doom Fang Pauldron really helping is a kind of team wipe, where you activate your Super, throw a Shield, maybe hit one of them, Shield Bash two more and then throw your shield at the final one. It just seems that Horns of Doom, while incredibly practical and a great Sentinel Shield boosting Exotic, can become a little bit niched.

The same cannot be said for PVE activities where the synergistic relationship between Shield Bash and Shield Throw allows your Guardian to massively increase your damage output in a big way, assuming you pay attention to your cooldowns. However, the recharge to your Super bar is a great perk no matter the situation but can work wonders in PVP, allowing you to get your Super back quicker if you are bold enough to utilise your melee ability successfully whenever it is charged. The downside to this is that the recharge to Super, while awesome, can become a bit negligible due to the decently long recharge times for abilities.

Acquisition?

The Doom Fang Pauldron can be chosen as an Exotic armour reward for completing the ‘Riptide’ mission on Titan. Summarily, it can also be found through a random Exotic Engram decryption or purchased from Xur if he carries it any given week.
